Negotiate an Offer

Securing the job is only the first step. The next is shaping the offer so it reflects your value and supports your goals. Effective negotiation begins with careful research on salary benchmarks, benefits, and advancement paths. It also requires clear communication of your accomplishments and an understanding of which terms matter most to you, from bonus eligibility to professional development support. Career advisors are available to help you build a strategy before any conversation with an employer or to respond to a job offer. They can review offer letters, model counterproposals, and coach you on timing and tone. Meet with an advisor early in the process to ensure you enter negotiations prepared, confident, and equipped to secure terms that set you up for long-term success. For graduate students, you can also use the “research tools” feature in 12Twenty to see reports on previous salaries offered for different functions, industries, companies and positions to help you with your planning.
