Experiential Learning opportunities for Undergraduates

As early as the first year, undergraduates are encouraged to pursue experiential learning activities. When you engage in such activities, you discover a new confidence, one that encourages you to stretch your intellectual boundaries and challenges you to embrace new levels of leadership. Consequently, “learning by doing” isn’t just something nice to do, it’s an essential feature of a Miami Herbert undergraduate education.

Meaningful learning experiences such as internships, community engagement, consulting projects, and research with faculty are available in a variety of curricular and co-curricular activities. As students layer in various experiences, they become more adept at considering new ideas, adjusting their attitudes and expectations, and changing behaviors, enabling them to better address real-world problems and the associated challenges.

Business Plan Competition

Starting a business is an invigorating adventure, especially when you can work with amazing peer co-founders and benefit from a vibrant ecosystem of collaboration and mentorship—that’s the Miami Herbert entrepreneurship experience. Whether you are member of UStart, the student entrepreneurship club, or you are ready to pitch your concept in the Business Plan Competition, you will find opportunities to sharpen your idea, build valuable relationships, and access essential resources to support your venture.

Student Managed Investment Fund

The Category 5 Student Managed Investment Fund is both an investment portfolio and a sequence of classes at Miami Herbert. With more than $1,000,000 in assets under management, the Fund provides students with real-world investment management and decision-making experience in both asset allocation and security selection.  Participants are active as analysts, who focus on stock selection decisions in one of six sectors, and portfolio managers, who focus on allocation of decisions and risk management.

The Fund is open to exceptionally strong, full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Miami Herbert who are interested in learning about the investment management industry.

Experiential Learning opportunities for Graduate Students

The curriculum at Miami Herbert Business School integrates theory with real-world experiential learning. This immersive experience, coupled with training in data analytics, develops a skillset that leads to well-founded business decisions.  Some of our most popular MBA/MS experiential learning programs include:

GLOBE Program

Global Learning Opportunities in Business Education (GLOBE) program, which takes place during spring or summer break, takes graduate students to various countries. Students visit local universities, companies, and NGOs to learn about the macro forces and policies affecting firms’ opportunities, strategies, operations, experiences, and best practices.

ACE Projects

Applied Career Experience (ACE) Projects are rigorous and structured academic experiences that place MBA/MS students in real-world business scenarios utilizing an experiential learning process. Teams of 3-5 students are each matched with a client organization to complete a consulting project of 7-14 weeks in length, culminating in a professionally produced and delivered set of actionable recommendations for their client. ACE projects provide a diverse and unique challenge for each student team, requiring students to use analytical and leadership skills obtained in their coursework to successfully manage a client-based project to completion. Training modules in management consulting methodology supplement the project-based work and give students a proven process for applying structured problem-solving techniques in real world settings. Faculty or practitioner mentors help each student team connect and integrate graduate business concepts for use in an applied setting. Client organizations are sourced from a wide variety of businesses, ranging from local community-based organizations to large multinational firms covering a breadth of industries. Clients commit their employee managers to engage with the student teams on a weekly basis throughout the project timeline. Site visits to the client’s offices are encouraged but not required. If taking this course as an elective, students must apply and be accepted to work on a specific project.

MiAmI LEADership challenge

The Miami Leadership Challenge is an action-based corporate crisis simulation that prepares students to lead in high-pressure, high-stakes situations. Students are immersed in a simulated business and media crisis where their ability to strategize through extreme turbulence, quick decision-making, and poise under pressure are put to the test. Student teams will play the part of senior executives tasked with responding to the crisis as it unfolds: receiving emails, social media updates, phone calls, texts, and more. Teams will then present their strategy to Board of Directors, journalists, and the public. Along the way, students receive personalized feedback from business leaders, communication coaches, and faculty experts. Top-performing individuals and the top three teams will receive prizes and awards.
